James “Jim” Walter Sweig, 86, of Gilbert, Arizona passed away November 30, 2017, surrounded by his family.
James was born to the late Earl and Eva (Pieche) Sweig, in Niagara, Wisconsin in January of 1931. He was one of seven children. James moved to Arizona in 1948, where he completed high school at the Phoenix Technical School, in finance. In 1957, he was married to Jeri Jene West.
James started his career at the Valley National Bank where he retired after 30 years of service as an Assistant Vice President. In the late 1950’s, Jim and Jeri became members of a small Episcopal congregation that met in a Phoenix storefront. This eventually became St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Phoenix. In 1964, as Treasure of the church, Jim assisted with the build at the current church location. Jim was also an active member in the Phoenix Optimist Club, as well.
His favorite hobbies included fishing, golfing, and bowling, as well as spending time at his cabin in Forest Lakes. Jim loved the Green Bay Packers, as well as ASU sports. He was a member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Chandler.
Jim is survived by his daughter Valerie, his son James C. and his wife Penny, and two grandchildren Amanda and Courtney, as well as his sister LaVerne and brother Tom. He is preceded in death by his wife Jeri, and his siblings Francis, Henrietta, Clarence, and Earl.
Visitation will take place Tuesday evening, December 5, 2017 from 5:00 PM until 7:30 PM at the Legacy Funeral Home, 1374 N. Arizona Ave. Chandler, AZ. Services will be held the following morning, Wednesday at 9:00 AM at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, 901 W. Erie St. Chandler, AZ.
