Dorothy Lee Grant
Dorothy Lee Grant was born on August 5, 1937 in Montgomery, Alabama to Eli and Minnie Grant. She was the third child of 5. She lived in Montgomery until the age of 10. She and her family moved to Chicago, Illinois where they resided on the South side. Dorothy was a strong-willed and ambitious child and began working selling newspaper for the Chicago Defender. She even composed her own jingle. She also attended the Chicago public school system. Dorothy grew up in the Church and professed Jesus Christ at an early age.
At the age of 20 she began working for Sealtest Ice Cream Company where she met Ted Ford. They courted and were married on April 25, 1958. Dorothy had 4 children and was a stepmother to 3 other children. In 1963, she divorced and became a single mother.
Dorothy began working for Highlander Ice Cream Company, and later retired in 1979. She was a great provider, courageous leader and always good for a laugh.
Dorothy was a woman who believed in helping others. She began helping mothers by caring for their children while they worked. She was a member of a community where many loved and respected her.
She leaves to mourn two brothers Alonzo(Juanita), Frank (Marie), and one sister Debra (eldest brother Eli Jr. preceded her in death), three children Delores(Stanley), Jacqueline(George), Emon, and (Erica who preceded her in death), three stepchildren, Darryl, Theodore and Altess, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 12 great great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.
She will be truly missed but not forgotten!
